 A large Victorian house and twelve acres of garden and woodland near the Suffolk coast at Leiston have been home to Summerhill School since 1927, four years after A.S. Neill founded the school with a radical belief: that education should fit the child, not the other way round. Run as a genuine democratic community where staff and pupils alike have an equal vote in weekly school meetings, Summerhill remains one of the most influential schools in the world, having shaped alternative education practice internationally since Neill's landmark book became an unlikely international bestseller.  Forty-five acres of wooded grounds overlooking the market town of Woodbridge have been home to Woodbridge School since 1864, though the school's roots reach back to 1577 and its curious claim to being the only English independent school founded in two public houses. Part of the Seckford Foundation, established by Elizabethan courtier Thomas Seckford, Woodbridge has been fully co-educational since 1974 and today educates pupils aged 4-18.
